Young, 1,91 m tall Polish basso cantante Mikołaj Bońkowski, praised for his impressing voice,  first studied geology and  engineering and worked as a civil engineer for a few years, before he began his vocal studies in at the Karól Lipiński Music Academy in Wrocław, with Prof. Bogdan Mikal, which he finished with a Master’s Degree.

 

AErasmus-year   led him  to the Music Conservatory Carl Maria von Weber in Dresden to the class of Prof. Edward Randall. 

 

Masterclasses for voice, interpretation and audition-training with Francesco Bottigliero,  Sylvain Camberling,  Riccardo Mascia, Jolanta Nicolai, Eytan Pessen Matthias Rexroth and Wolfgang Schöne completed his musical education.

From 2024 on, he works with the renowned bass and teacher Raymond Modesti in the Netherlands.


In summer 2021, he overtook in on a short call the part of  MANDARIN in Puccini's "Turandot" at the Open Air Festival Oper im Steinbruch in St. Margarethen (Austria), performing alongside a.o. Martina Serafin, in stage direction of Taddeus Strausberger and under the baton of Maestro Giusepe Finzi.


In summer 2023, he returned to St. Margarthen as ZUNIGA in Bizet's "Carmen", in stage direction Arnaud Bernard and under the baton of Valerio Galli.


Future seasons 2023/24/25 see his house-debut at Den Jyske Opera Århus ARCHON and OLD MAN in Martin's "Greek Passion" in stage direction of Philipp Kochheim, DOTTORE GRENVILLE in Verdi's "La Traviata" and SWALLOW in Britten's "Peter Grimes" at TheaterOsnabrück, as well as a 2-season's residence-contract (theatre soon) with debuts such as PETER BESENBINDER in Humperdinck's "Hänsel & Gretel" or BARTOLO in Mozart's "Le Nozze di Figaro".


Commitments of the recent included his role-debuts as POLYPHEMUS in Händel's "Acis und Galathea" at the Opera Królewska Warsawa (Royal Opera in Warsaw), as OLD MAN & ARCHON in "Greek Passion" at Theater Osnabrück and as UBERTO in Pergolesi's "La Serra Padrona" at the Silesian Festival in the Perl of Zeliszow, in a production by ARS Augusta Görlitz, where he already performed several Solo-Song-Recitals, a.o. during the <Mozart and Schubert Days> and where he overtook the part of WICHTELCHEN in Marschalk's "Das Wichtelchen".

Furthermore, he created - as Alumni of the Dresden Music Conservatory -  the title part of ONIROS in the world-premiere "Oniros - a music theater of dreams" by Alberto Arroyo; sang Solo-Song-Recitals in the Silesian Museum Görlitz and at the Polish Liberation Day in the Gerhard Hauptmann Museum in Szlarska Poręba; appeared as LORO in Moniuszkos "Karmiol" with the Wrocław Theatre Society in the Culture Centre  in Bolesławiec; and with the role of  CHIRON in "Andpronicus - Synekdocha" , he returned to the Teatr Pieśń Koźla (The Song of the Goat Theater) in Wrocław, where he, always in stage directions by Grzegorz Bral, also performed HORATIO in „Hamlet, the commentary“, EDMUND in „Songs of Lear“, CHORUS-LEADER in „Anty-Gone“ and TALTHYBIOS in „Warrior“  at the Tapiola Hall (Finnland), the Shakespeare’s Globe London, the Shaekespeare’s Festival Hamletscenen Helsignor (Denmark), the Israel Festival Jerusalem, the FITS Festival Sibiu (Romania), the Beijing Tianqiao Performaing Arts Center, the Great Theater of China Shangai and the Shanghai Oriental Arts Center (China), the Shakespeare’s Theater Gdańsk and the CETA Piekarnia Performing Center Wrocław (Poland), as well as at the Zellerbach Hall Berkley (USA).

 

Mikołaj Bońkowski gave his operatic debut in 2017 as BARTOLO in Mozart's  „Le Nozze di Figaro“ in a production of the conservatory, performed at the Opera Wroclaw. Furthermore, he embodied parts like Mozart's  DON GIOVANNI; CHARLY in Szymanowski's „Loteria na mężów, czyli narzeczony nr. 69“ (The husband lottery, or fiancee no. 69) or WICHTELCHEN in Marschalk's „Das Wichtelchen“ (The little goblin) or INFERNUS in R. Augustyn's „Descendus Christi ad Infernum“ in productions of the conservatory, the  National Music Forum / Filharmonia Wrocław or the Ars Augusta Görlitz,  and STRANGER in the multimedia-spectacle „Synagoga – 22 Edith Stein“, performed in the Cathedral Św. Michała Archanioła, the biggest and most impressive church in Polish Wrocław.

 

Since 2017, he appears  on a regular base at the  International Moniuszko Festival,  where he was seen so far in the parts of KRZETYNA in „Ideał  czyli nowa precjoza“  (The ideal or a new value), LORO in „Karmaniol czyli Francuzi lubią żartować“ (Karmaniol or Frenchman like to joke), as well several times as MICHAŁ in „Nowy Don Kiszot“ (The new Don Quichote), which he also embodied at the Opera Kameralna Warszawa (Chamberopera Warsaw).

 

His concertrepertoire includes Bachs "Weihnachtsoratorium", Händel's "Messiah", Beethoven's "Messe in C-Dur" and Żebrowski's "Magnificat", as well as numerous songs by German, Polish and Russian composers such as Brahms, Schubert, Schumann, Wolf, Loewe, Moniuszko, Penderecki, Szymanowski, Mussorgsky, Rachmaninov, a.m.o., as well as Dvořák`s „Bible Songs“ and Shostakovich`s „Spanish Songs“.
